PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS: DESCRIPTION

Thursday, Sept. 21, 2023

Workshop 1 8:30- 10:00 am HST
Promoting Ea in evaluation practice through Native Hawaiian ways of doing, being, and knowing.

Herb Lee, President & CEO Pacific American Foundation

Dawn Mahi Senior Program Officer Consuelo Foundation

Kathy Tibbetts Managing Director, Research and Evaluation Liliʻuokalani Trust

This workshop privileges a Native Hawaiian (NH) worldview through two NH frameworks when sharing the evaluation space with nā mea kuleana or stakeholders. The questions include: a) what are typical ways you share evaluation power and privilege with nā mea kuleana, b) to what extent do the theories we use and assumptions we make facilitate and hinder Ea, and c) in what ways do practicing NH worldview principles transform your kuleana as an evaluator? Promoting authentic engagement and pilina building requires evaluators to practice these reflective skills to advance culturally responsive and sustainable evaluation in NH contexts.

Workshop 2 10:30-12:30 pm HST
Advancing equitable demographic data collection

Joyce Lee-Ibarra Founder/Principal JLI Consulting LLC j

Kim Leonard Founder/Principal Leonard Research & Evaluation

Demographic data is necessary to understand who is benefiting from programs, or where efforts to be responsive or inclusive are falling short. What is our kuleana as evaluators to ensure that those who have been institutionally marginalized feel seen and empowered in providing their demographic information, and how might doing so strengthen their sense of self-determination?In this session we’ll explore how we can use demographic data collection to advance equity - both the means and the ends - by applying the Equitable Evaluation Framework (™) and respondent-centered survey design.

Workshop 3 1:00 -2:30 pm HST

Building Virtual Communities with Pacific Partners: Lessons Learned from a Community of Practice with Educators from the U.S. Pacific Jurisdictions

Natasha Saelua Researcher REL Pacific at McREL International

Christina K. Tydeman, Executive Director of Research and Evaluation,  McREL International

Sinton Soalablai  Consultant and Regional Liaison  McREL International

In this preconference virtual workshop, facilitators will introduce efforts to build a pan-Pacific Community of Practice around the topic of data culture and data use. Facilitators will present an approach to hosting conversations about data which are culturally responsive to Pacific contexts and prioritize community building. We discuss the use of virtual tools to encourage collective praxis for island people, who may often be distanced from each other yet who share many of the same goals and challenges. We hope to create a forum for evaluators working in data culture contexts that are very different from the typical educational setting.
